Hon. Dr. Sheila McKenzie – Health Sciences

Scholarly, driven, and compassionate are just a few words to describe the Honourable Dr. Sheila McKenzie, an excellent example of the social capital that exists within the African-Canadian community. Her relentless commitment to the health and wellness industry, along with her humanitarian work has made her an excellent role model for aspiring young men and women.

Originally from Jamaica, she was one of the first groups of scholarship recipients to graduate from the Jamaica Ministry of Health School’s dental training program. Shortly after migrating to Canada, Dr. McKenzie pursued clinical refresher courses in dental hygiene that allowed her to receive a dental hygiene license from the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario in 1983. Being a relentless and driven individual she then went on to pursue more accolades in the medical and dental field becoming a licensed doctor of homeopathy, and a licensed medical acupuncturist just to name a few.

Dedicated to health and wellness issues, Dr. McKenzie has become a sought after expert in the area. Author of two books: Oral Health a Layman’s Guide and Natural Home Medicine Cabinet, Dr. McKenzie contributes regularly to numerous health and wellness publications such as Alive Magazine and Vitality Magazine just to name a few. AS president World Organization of Natural Medicine (WONM) she has devoted many years of work to humanitarian medicine. Her selfless work with the WONM as well as her other project; Clinics for Humanity International earned her the most ‘Outstanding Person of 20th Century’ award at the World Organization of Natural Medicine Unity Congress in 2006.

Not only concerned with local humanitarian efforts, Dr. McKenzie has been a MP International Parliament for Safety and Peace (IPSP) serving as a public health diplomat. While serving under the IPSP Dr. McKenzie contributed more 100 hours of community outreach in various international communities. It is for these reasons that we would first like to congratulate the Honourable Dr. McKenzie on her humanitarian efforts and dedication to the health industry. That dedication has made her an important pillar in the African Canadian community as well as earned her the BBPA Harry Jerome Health Sciences Award.

Doctor Haissam Bou-Said, WONM/Ambassador/Lebanon hosted a formal ceremony on May 29th, 2009 in the city of Aley Lebanon to present the Chief of Lebanese Army General “Chawki AL Masri” Doctorate in Humanitarian Service Honors causa from WONM University of Humanitarian. The award was given to Dr. Bou-Said, on behalf of the general at the WONM awareness and award ceremony held in Toronto, Canada on May 24th, 2009.

The following government reprehensive attended the event to be part of the memorable history making occasion.
President of the Republic of Lebanon, the Prime minister of Lebanon, the Foreign Minister, the Minister of Interior, The Minister of Youth, Lots of Parliament Deputies, Ambassadors from China – Sultanate of Oman – UK – Romania – Iran – Iraq.
The President of the Municipality of Aley was also there. Many citizens from Lebanon and other Middle East countries.

CANADIAN COLLEGE OF HUMANITARIAN MEDICINE

Canadian College of Humanitarian Medicine (CCHM) is a non profit educational institution accredited by the World Organization of Natural Medicine (WONM), Clinics for Humanity program and is affiliated with the University of Humanitarian Medicine. It focuses on developing educational courses that address the social conditions such as the root causes of illness, and the barriers to traditional healthcare.
“If access to humanitarian health care is considered a human right, then who is considered human enough to have that right?”

MISSION

The mission of CCHM is to ensure access to traditional humanitarian medicine health care at home and abroad, affect health policy to better help the underserved peoples group, and to elevate humanitarian values in traditional natural medicine health education.
To carry out this mission, the college has three major goals:
• To develop and operate education programs in humanitarian medicine for undergraduate and graduate students as well as practicing physicians and the general public
• To affect policy change that increases humanitarian medicine health care and addresses the root causes of health inequities.
• To become the organizational home for the school’s existing humanitarian medicine-related activities as well as to develop new programs that reflect the college’s mission of teaching, research, patient care, and community service.

The mission of the World Organization of Natural Medicine (WONM) is to fulfill the duty entrusted to it by its first meeting of its founders, which is, the delivery of primary health care and natural medicine to the worlds economically deprived peoples.
